Winter Skin- Less is More

Winter Skin- Less is More

Just as the roots of plants recede deeper into the earth to protect themselves from winter's cold, our bodies' blood and lymphatic system recede deeper into the skin. The flow of each will slow and stagnate, reducing our natural glow. As a protection mechanism, the skin's immune response is heightened, and dryness and irritation can occur if not properly tended.

I find that the initial response for most clients is to want to 'scrub' away the dryness. Their skin is feeling tight and rough in texture. They often book a microdermabrasion or peel. I would say yes to these requests if it was all about the money (as these services generally cost more). But knowing what I know about skin structure and function, I just can't offer these services in the winter months! Over exfoliating turns into a vicious cycle of removing the all important stratum corneum (top layer of skin) and desperately trying to replenish via a slew of topicals, that are often further barrier degrading.

Instead, take a step back from the skincare excess and focus on supporting your skin with the minimalist 2 in 1 Essential Lipids Delicate Barrier. When the skin is over exfoliated, it is in a state of inflammation. Inflammation=aging. Constantly stripping the skin means a weakened barrier, which creates trans-epidermal water loss, creating dehydration, which leads to inflammation. And therefore premature aging of the skin cells. We don't want that. There is a time and place for stimulating cell turnover via exfoliation and winter is NOT that time. So instead, I encourage you to focus on replenishing your skin with raw and unrefined jojoba, chia seed, anti-inflammatory moringa and red raspberry seed oils in my seasonal favorite Essential Lipids Delicate Barrier- a focused blend of whole plant lipids come together to mirror and support our skin's own natural lipid barrier. This nourishing oil is soothing and supportive to all skin types, especially the most sensitive. The best part is that it can also be used as a moisturizer! Say hello to clearing the clutter, eh?! When using it as a moisturizer, always pair with your favorite Hydrating Elixir . Let us not forget our cells need both water and fat soluble nutrients to thrive, and this combo does the trick.

If you find your skin to be constantly exposed to the elements, are feeling extra dry and like to layer your skin nutrients, add a layer of the Recovery Balm Soothe+Mend, a cult favorite in the laurel Skin line- This multi-functional balm reduces the appearance of redness, swelling, and irritation while offering up a therapeutic dose of whole plant goodness to jump-start and support the skin's own healing process. If you are a winter outdoor enthusiast, or if you suffer from perioral dermatitis, eczema, or any inflamed skin condition, this Balm is an absolute must.

I always hear clients say, 'I drink a ton of water and can't figure out why my skin is still dry?!". Water is wonderful and essential, but water alone will not hydrate your cells. Try squeezing in a half a lemon, and a pinch of mineral rich salt into a big glass of water water first thing in the morning for a dose of hydrating electrolytes. Sip Comforts Herb Rich Tea throughout the day to provide your body with nutrient dense hydration! Herb rich tea is a much more effective way to hydrate, plus it calms the nerves and provides support when are our immune systems are most challenged.

Another seasonal favorite is drinking bone broth regularly. Mineral and collagen protein rich, it can't be beat for supporting the skin for winter. I have been told by many that its very easy to make, but I just can't get my head around it. I'm just not a kitchen pro. So I go to my fav local eatery LB Kitchen and buy in bulk!!

Winter is the season to embrace the 'less is more' mentality. I am enjoying the slower pace and loving the coziness that the season allows for. It's all about conserving and supporting ourselves, so we can reawaken in the spring. Our skin is no different.
